21st Century Skills

30 Mar

I am really tired of this phrase. It’s a buzz-word and catches the attention of non-teachers everywhere. But whoever invented it has GREAT intentions…

To be fair – there is most definitely a disparate and wide gap between the skills that modern public education gives students and those that employers need. But there is also a HUGE AND VAST misunderstanding about the role that public education plays in the life of a child, and the expectations that parents have for institutional education. These are generalities, and I realize this. Many parents are not accustomed to the liquidity of pedagogy practices and the new pushes on 21st century skills (which basically means critical thinking, to me.)
